Position Argument Mulitmedia Presentation
A position argument starts with a desire to make your position known about an issue you care about, feel invested in, or find intellectually stimulating. Your sense of exigency, or motivated curiosity, drives you to learn more about the issue.
A position argument states a claim that reasonable people hold substantially different opinions about. For example, people might use words indicating value judgments about the issue, such as should be, should not be, the best, the worst, too much, and not enough.
Choose a topic that interests you that has multiple viewpoints within the larger topic.
Prepare a presentation supporting one of these controversial sides; you should take a strong stance in this presentation. Keep in mind the other viewpoints within the topic, and make sure you mention and refute them as deftly as possible to show your reader you are aware there are other ways of thinking about this, but your way is the most logical.
You may accomplish this through preparation of a Powerpoint presentation (if you do not own PowerPoint, you can use Open Office “presentations mode” which can be downloaded for free at http://www.openoffice.org/).
Alternatively, you may choose to produce a video presentation with slides or other document and your voiceover explaining your arguments. You can use a free online resource such Jing (http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html) to create this presentation.
If you prepare a Powerpoint presentation, it should be at least 20 slides long. A video presentation should be 5-10 minutes, though you will not be penalized for going over 10 minutes unless you start going off on tangents or present information that is needlessly cumulative or irrelevant.
If you choose to do a PowerPoint presentation, you can convert it to a PDF and submit through the system or you can email your PowerPoint file to the instructor and submit a statement in the system that says that you did so (and include the date on which you did so). If you produce a video, you will need to post the video online through a site such as Youtube or Vimeo and then send your instructor the link to your presentation. If you are unfamiliar with this technology, you will need to either learn it or stick to a PowerPoint presentation. These skills are good skills to have in any case, so it pays to spend some time training yourself to produce videos if you’d like to go that route.
