1. Please watch the Video Instruction to learn how to use Excel to work on the Pooled Data from class for the research project report. The video is based on a smaller set of hypothetical data, so that you can learn how to do it. The Word file is the instructions used in the video.
2. Please watch the Video Instruction to learn how to use Excel to create Charts for your report.
3. Please watch the Review with Real Data Video for a quick review about the Pivot Table tool (only if you have watched the detailed video before. If not, you need to watch the detailed video (referred to in (1) above) so that you understand the details. This is just a quick review and reference.
4. Please download the Pooled Data Excel file from the whole class for your use for the report. You MUST use this set of data for data analysis for your report.

File Research Report Writing (1): General Guidelines (3.667 KB)
File Research Report Writing (3): Focused Paragraphs (3.774 KB)
File Research Report Writing (2): For HDEV3301 Gender Segregation (3.696 KB)
File Research Report Writing: Word Formatting Tool Tips (3.677 KB)
Please watch the 4 videos to learn how to write your research report.
NOTE:
* The first video shows you the general principles and illustrate how to write a good research report with APA style.
* The second video shows you how to organize the materials for the gender segregation and group size report.
* The third video shows you how to write a FOCUSED paragraph by using the Literature Review as an example (this video is very helpful if you want to revise and improve your literature review for inclusion in your report, if you did not get full points for the literature review).
* The fourth video gives a couple of tips for formatting the text in Word, so as to make the APA formatting a little easier.
But for specific report requirements, please follow the specifics in the Instructions for Research Report. These videos, together with the two past student example reports, will give you some concrete ideas how to prepare a good research report.
Outline of your research report
Introduction: (approximately 3 pages)
1)Very brief statement of study purpose or research question
2)Gender segregation is xxxxx (refs.)
3)Gender segregation is found as early as xxx, what’s found at age 4, and what’s found at age 6 (refs.) [focus on a) whether there is G.S., and b) whether the intensity changes between 4 and 6]
4)Group size for boys between 4 and 6 years, and for girls between 4 and 6 years.
5)What issues/questions past research findings raise? (e.g., what is the remaining problem that justifies your current study)
6)The focus of YOUR study (i.e., gender segregation and group size for 4 and 6 year olds). They should be formulated as your research questions.

7)Your hypotheses: they should be stated in affirmative statements, e.g.,
Hypothesis 1: There will be gender segregation for both 4 year olds and 6 year olds. etc.
Methods: (approximately 1 page)
Subjects: school (or area), mean age for each age group, general locations, gender [a paragraph]
Procedure: activity/situation, length of time, observer role, observation grid, how you note down info, what information was recorded, how many observers. [1 or 2 paragraphs]
Scoring/coding/categorizing: group types and definition (what you mean by group, same sex, mixed sex, etc.), how did you calculate the data, what is GSI, what it indicates, how did you calculate group size, etc. [1 paragraph about coding, and 1 paragraph about calculation of data.]
Results: (approximately 1 page)
Charts, graphs, tables, with brief descriptive narrative. No interpretation of data here.

Discussion: (approximately 2 pages)
1.Summarize YOUR findings 1) gender segregation, and 2) group sizes of the two genders from a developmental perspective.
2.How YOUR findings relate to previous studies you presented in Intro. and read elsewhere.
3.What is the significance of your finding in the above context? (i.e., if your finding is different from the previous studies, what does that mean? OR if your finding is the same from the previous studies, what does that mean? This is the only place where you put your own views in the report, BUT your views MUST be based on the data you have presented.)
Conclusion: (1 SHORT paragraph)
Brief summary of finding and conclusions.
References: APA format required (Please be careful here, since I’ll be very picky on this, as we have done this in the literature review already)
